Disappointing for practicing engineers.

The book is a rigorous coverage of electromagnetic theory; it does not explain electromagnetic interference or how one can compute interfering levels with a minimum amount of theory. The back cover states: "Designed to entice the practical engineer to explore some worthwhile mathematical methods , and to reorient the theoretical scientist to industrial applications... The book is a mathematically rigorous exposition of electromagnetic theory with applications in electromagnetic compatibility and high speed digital design." I was hoping for a text that would explain the phenomena and provide modest and memorable mathematical approach to solving problems. Instead the book is another theoretical text with little practical advice.

Theoretical EMC

As the book's title indicates, this is a theoretical text for understanding the diverse fields from which EMC comes from and where the EMC rules of thumb originate from. Aside from collecting those diverse subjects in one book, it also does the reader the favor of providing a mathematically rigorous foundation for the equations that are used in the text. Having both the electromagnetic theory explained and proving that they are mathematically sound, now the reader can have faith in the arsenal of EMC tools he or she has in order to accurately root cause an issue. This is the book's intent and it does meet it. Too many times will an EMC rule of thumb sound like common sense which leads the engineer to believe that EMC is done by logical intuition or what I refer to as "physics by intuition", but this is not always the case. The book demonstrates that they do have a rigorous foundation. It is one thing to read an equation and pick up a calculator, but it is another for the reader to understand the meaning behind the equation conveyed in the language of mathematics. Having this knowledge, the reader can make the connection between real-world EMC problems and the theory to come up with sound design solutions rather than just rely on rules of thumb. Plenty of other excellent texts exist for the practicing EMC engineer but this is one of the few that deep dives into the theoretical side of things and hence where its value lies.
