Exploring the unexplored

I think steampunk now has a cousin. I'm not sure what you would call that cousin - explorationpunk? - but THE EXPEDITIONERS AND THE TREASURE OF DROWNED MAN'S CANYON definitely shares blood with steampunk. There's the alternate history aspect. In the Expeditioners world, there was a certain machine that never existed in our world. The machine eventually led to the discovery of new lands and a longer-lasting age of imperialism. There's the fashion aspect. Explorers wear vests equipped with all sorts of nifty gadgets. But The Expeditioners is a different beast. No steam in sight.

Kit, Zander, and M. K.'s father, Alexander West, recently went missing and is assumed dead. But they knew where their father intended to go, and it wasn't where the government told them he died. When a mysterious man delivers a book to Kit, government agents start poking around the kids' business. In turn, they decide to investigate their father's belongings more closely. There's half of a map that's clearly important, and no one can decode Alexander West's secrets better than his children. They set out to find the other half of the map and go to where it leads.

THE TREASURE OF DROWNED MAN'S CANYON will appeal to fans of adventure stories. There's a nice balance in genders - once the children meet up with Sukey, there are two girls and two boys. Sukey and M. K. are just as tough as the boys and both have important skills that aid the group's quest. (No, neither of them are medics.) Kit, the brainy one, is also the narrator. Thus, I think girls and guys can enjoy the book. But THE TREASURE OF DROWNED MAN'S CANYON goes deeper than most adventure stories and asks questions about who owns the treasure. It seems like The Expeditioners will be a series not only interested in unexplored places, but also the people who live in those places and what will happen to them if they are discovered.

But that doesn't mean THE TREASURE OF DROWNED MAN'S CANYON avoids the tropes of adventure stories. There are lots of puzzles, and I love a story with puzzles. There are chase scenes and crash scenes and scenes with newly discovered species that are not friendly. I was, at points, strongly reminded of Jules Verne. And in my opinion that is a good thing.

Katherine Roy's art will help to draw in readers who might be daunted by the size of the book. (320 pages at a larger-than-standard trim size.) Her style is quite geometric and stylized, but not in an offputtingly arty way. The way she shades reminds me of topographic maps, which is quite fitting in a novel where cartography plays a large role in the plot.

I think THE TREASURE OF DROWNED MAN'S CANYON was a good beginning to the series. I felt like the characters fit fairly stereotypical roles, but there's room for growth. However, other parts of the novel were very developed. S. S. Taylor spent a lot of time developing the Expeditioners' world, and I'm eager to see more of it. The novel certainly ends with an interesting change in the Expeditioners' lives. (The next book might involve boarding school! I love fictional boarding schools!) I'm also intrigued by the fact Alexander West may be alive and hiding. The Expeditioners seems like it will have a strong story holding together the separate adventures, something I am definitely in favor of.

I liked this one, and strongly recommend it. Partially because in addition to a fun story the book is really pretty. And the cover turns over to become a poster! Who doesn't love posters?

In my opinion, the most challenging aspect of teaching a graphic design course, particularly an introductory course, is a student's understanding of the "visual." Ms. Landa's text tackles this difficult task handily by offering straightforward solutions for building sound design fundamentals, and for thinking conceptually about those devices in our culture - human attitudes and visual identifiers - that marry an audience with the "visual." About the Author
Robin Landa holds the title of Distinguished Professor in the Robert Busch School of Design at Kean University of New Jersey. She is included among the teachers that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching calls the "great teachers of our time." Most recently, Landa was a finalist in the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Creative Leaders competition. Professor Landa has won numerous awards for design, writing, and teaching, and is the author of 12 published books about graphic design, branding, advertising, and creativity, including GRAPHIC DESIGN SOLUTIONS (Wadsworth/Cengage), ADVERTISING BY DESIGN (John Wiley & Sons), and DESIGNING BRAND EXPERIENCES (Wadsworth/Cengage).

Great book for teaching design

I've used this book as the textbook for at least five Intro or Intermediate Graphic Design classes that I've taught over the past two years. It's by far the best basic overview design textbook that is currently available. And I've looked at dozens of other design books! I can't say enough good things about Landa's book - it covers all the basics in a way that is easy to understand, with many visuals to illustrate the concepts. It's well written, well illustrated, and well designed.

My only complaint is the high price - I sometimes teach at a community college, and the $100 price tag is definitely a challenge. I've had students drop the class because they couldn't afford the cost of the class AND the cost of the book.

Gorgeous textbook

This book is a most for a graphic design student. The design of the book itself is inspiring all on its own. I have never found myself admiring the beauty of a textbook of all things, but this one is a kind of masterpiece. Throw in the the actual you know...text and the excellent images and supplemental information and you have one of the best design books out there. Must have

Updated. Great pictures! Textbook reading!

I initially rated this book four starts, but after reading several chapters of the book, I have decided to change the rating to five stars. When I first looked at the book and started reading it, I thought it was boring and like an art history book. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book is a great resource for beginning graphic designers as it covers the technical considerations of graphic design. It is not the most exciting read, but the information is great. It covers such topics as typography, the graphic design process, composition, branding, corporate communication, etc.

The first half of the book starts off with the technical considerations (alignment, typographic size, color, etc.). What I like about this section is that it explains the reason behind why we should and shouldn't do things a certain way. The second half of the book

The second half of the book covers the application of the technical information we learned in the first half. Chapters 7-15 cover posters, package design, branding, corporate communication (i.e. brochures, annual reports, etc.), web design. I have not gotten to chapter 7 yet, but judging on the quality of the first five chapters, I expect the second half of the book to be just as beneficial as the first half.

What makes this book even better is that it is packed with examples of just about every topic covered. I enjoy looking at the examples just to help me see what professional graphic designers have done. Also, this book offers case studies, essays by graphic designers, and other side notes to help the graphic design student.

Overall, this is an excellent text for any graphic design student or someone interested in graphic design.

NOTE: Some reviews have mentioned an access card. I bought mine used. It did not come with an access code, but I didn't even know the book had an access code/web counter part until I read the post. The book is thorough and filled with excellent examples. I do not believe that the web access code is even necessary unless you are someone who prefers reading the textbook online, but otherwise, I say the companion access code is not essential. You can go to the publishers website and access some of their free resources like their flashcards and glossary here:
