Not Your Average Murder Mystery -- Good Focus on Characters

Story Overview
On the surface, Lisa Barkley seems to have it all -- a husband who was her college sweetheart, two lovely daughters, a high-powered PR job, a residence in Manhattan, and a best friend she's had since college. But Lisa's life isn't as perfect as it may seem on the outside.

* She is beginning to suspect her husband Sam might be having an affair -- and the distance that has been growing between them seems insurmountable. In addition, she is startled to find herself feeling attracted to another man.

* Her daughters are pulling away from her -- seemingly embarrassed to be seen with her.

* Her job hangs in the balance when her company is sold to another PR firm -- and the new vice president seems hell bent on making Lisa's life miserable.

* The financial pressures of living in Manhattan and sending her daughters to an expensive private school are taking a toll on the Barkley finances -- but neither Sam or Lisa can talk together about the financial pressures they face.

* Her best friend Deirdre is in a volatile relationship with Ben -- a dashing photographer who won't commit to her and sometimes leaves her with bruises.

When Jack -- an old college friend of Lisa, Sam and Deirdre -- comes to town for a reunion dinner, it seems like things in Lisa's life start to unravel all at the same time -- Sam's distance, job pressures, financial pressures, pressures to fit in at her daughters' school, and Deirdre's toying with both Jack and Ben. Just when it seems like things can't get any worse, it does -- Deirdre is found murdered in her apartment and no one (including Lisa) has an alibi. Driven to find out what happened to her best friend and put her life back together, Lisa must face the truth about herself, her husband, her friends and best friend -- no matter how painful it might be.

My Thoughts
When I was contacted about reading and reviewing this book, I was expecting a run-of-the-mill murder mystery. Now there is nothing wrong with murder mysteries. I certainly enjoy them from time to time. But I often find them to be a bit formulaic. But this one sounded a bit different from the norm, and the setting of Manhattan was intriguing so I said "Yes...please send me a copy."

I was thrilled to find out that this book WAS NOT your standard murder mystery. Lisa's character and the stresses of her life are very well-developed. In fact, the murder doesn't happen until about two-thirds of the way through the book -- giving you plenty of time to get to know all the characters and the stresses of Lisa's life. For me, this made for a better-than-average mystery. I always like when an author takes the time to develop the characters rather than just focusing on the "who done it" or procedural aspects. In fact, I think the author could have skipped the whole murder part of it and still had a wonderful book about marriage, friendship, and the pressures of being a working mom. I really don't think the book would have suffered at all had Deirdre lived.

I also like the little details the author works into the book that give it a ring of authenticity. For example, here is a passage from when Lisa's husband is looking for some mittens for one of their daughters:

It occurs to me that he is not really asking for their likeliest location but prompting me to find them for him. I consider telling him to look for them himself but I don't. The first attempt at ferreting out last winter's accessories from the jumble of mismatched gloves, hats and scarves is an iffy proposition at best, especially for one with little experience in this type of archaeological dig.

I don't know about you, but I very much related to this passage -- finding gloves for the first time in a winter is a task best left up to Mom!

The other aspect of the book I liked was the setting of Manhattan. My family likes to visit New York City, and it was kind of fun to read about the Barkley's life in the city and recognize some of the places where we had been on visits. Also, the sections where Lisa feels outclassed and intimidated by the mothers at her daughters' elite private school were fascinating to me. It felt like getting a glimpse at secret society from an outsider's perspective -- kind of like falling into The Nanny Diaries but from a working mom's point-of-view.

My Final Recommendation
This was a good read, and I would recommend it. If you are looking for a "by the books" procedural-type murder mystery, this might not be a good fit for you. To me, this was really more of a character-driven novel that just happens to have a murder in it.

Really interesting book...

I picked out this book based solely on the product description. I was not really sure what to expect but "Best Intentions" definitely far exceeded my expectations. It was a fun book, in the sense that I enjoyed the gossipy look into the private school, New York lifestyle of privilege but it was also a subtle mystery. It was not a true thriller in the sense that the "heroine" was never in danger, but there were definitely mysteries surrounding her husband, work and best friend. I liked how the book did not fit into any one category. I also enjoyed the ending; satisfying without being too pat. It was realistic I think. I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's books.

Well-written, quality chick-lit

Lisa Barkley and her husband have what they need to stay afloat in the ultra-competitive Manhattan world they inhabit. They may not have a cash cushion, but they can pay the tuition for their daughters to attend an exclusive Upper East Side private school (even though the other mothers make Lisa feel like she doesn't belong in their world of casual chic; she muses that they seem to have been born wearing ballerina flats.) But approaching their 40th birthdays, a lingering unease or discontent is beginning to weigh on both of them in different ways. Sam is struggling to break stories, competing with younger (and cheaper) journalists; Lisa must deal with obstreperous PR clients and the sale of the agency that she works for to a much bigger firm.

It turns out, however, that these concerns take a back seat to more dramatic events that flow out of a reunion dinner between Lisa, Sam, her oldest friend,Deirdre, and Deirdre's college boyfriend Jack. Jack, it seems, has never recovered from his early love for Deirdre; she, meanwhile, is grappling with her reluctance to have what she views as a temporary state of singledom become a permanent, irrevocable condition of being single, which she fears will happen after she turns 40. The hopes and fears of all four of the college friends will collide and long-buried secrets are disinterred, with horrifying consequences.

Emily Listfield has a real knack for portraying the fast-paced world of New York from the perspective of someone who isn't a part of the smart set. From social-climbing mothers on the charity gala circuit to hedge fund managers worried about her reputation, she nails the characters she portrays. And her writing is downright elegant, with marvelous turns of phrase that are so pithy they make you smile. This is a great novel for anyone who enjoys a good yarn revolving around relationships -- family, work and friends -- with a much more serious bent and higher quality writing than any chick lit I've read. But... in common with most chick lit, too many of Listfield's plot elements appear and disappear too rapidly and conveniently to be any more than plot devices, disappointing the reader. It seems as if a major thread will revolve around the sinister figure of the new overseer at Lisa's PR agency; but her fate at the agency and what happens to the agency are dealt with in (count 'em) six sentences scattered throughout the final 20% of the book. The reasons Lisa suspects her husband of having an affair are spelled out in detail; the truth is delivered in an almost perfunctory manner. Similarly, the odd plot twist involving the hedge fund manager's real motivation in being Lisa's "rabbi" is so out of the blue and out of context that I found myself going "hunh"?

If you approach this book with modest expectations, you'll likely enjoy the writing, the characters and the major plot twists without worrying about these more minor deficiencies. I've rated it 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

About the Author
St. Alphonsus Liguori was born in 1696 to Neapolitan nobility at Marianella, Italy. He became a recognizable lawyer after going through law school at the age of sixteen, but later decided to leave law in favor of giving his salvation more attention. Alphonsus joined the Oratory of St. Philip Neri as a seminarian and was ordained in 1726, when he was thirty. The homilies he gave had the special ability of converting those who had fallen away from the faith. He also founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, and authored such works as The Glories of Mary, The True Spouse of Jesus Christ, Attaining Salvation, The Blessed Virgin Mary, Preparation for Death Abridged, What Will Hell Be Like?, The Twelve Steps to Holiness and Salvation, and The Way of the Cross.

After being a bishop for over a decade, St. Alphonsus Liguori died on the first of August, 1787. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839, and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871. His feast is celebrated on August 1.

A Spiritual Retreat in Your Pocket!

How to Converse Familiarly with God
Anxious because your bus is late?
Angry because your bus is late?
Bored because your bus is late?
Distracted by worry, grief, anxiety, your LIFE, etc., because your bloody bus is late???

I don't know any girl (or, sure, guy) who wouldn't want Fr. Liguori in her jeans pocket, backpack or purse. I'm not even Catholic, but I wish I could have known this sweet, gentle soul, but I'm glad I can have his calming, hopeful, encouraging, instructional presence anywhere I go.

This tiny, friendly book reminds me that God wants all of me and warmly invites me to share EVERYTHING. And I might as well, Liguori reminds me at one point, because God knows and loves us, and was aware that we'd have faults, shortcomings, errors and flaws before we were even born, and chose to create us anyway out of love and pure enjoyment. Liguori reminds me that God ENJOYS us and welcomes us back into open arms every time we fall. We need only get back up and turn around. We are never alone.

I cherish this book so much I buy several at a time so I can give them away. I keep mine and highlight and underline in it till it falls apart, then order a new one and start highlighting what strikes me all over again.

There are two books in this vein ,whereby we practice the presence of God, that should be read if you want to move your lips(mostly silently), head, eyes and heart to God, simply and quickly throughout your day. Truly edifying

Excellent, beautiful and useful little booklet on how to have the close and personal relationship with God that the New Covenant intended- (John 15:15, 1 Cor 1:9, Rom 8:14). It's really a crime that with such a rich 2,000 year old spiritual heritage, as this booklet is one example of, all we get from the pulpits of the modern Catholic Church (at least in America) are banalities and bread-and-water spirituality of the "God is Love" and "Be good" variety.

Buy this, not the compilation

This is by far the best of my ukulele instruction books. The authors and DVD teacher Daniel Ho do a fine job of introducing the novice player to the ukulele, to playing chords, to strumming, to note reading. Exercises are in that sweet 80/20 spot educators like to talk about (where learners are always being pushed forward-the 20%, but also are getting reinforcement on past learning-the 80%). The idea is that 80/20 keeps students challenged, but not frustrated. (I have no idea if this came about by happy accident or intention.) This book is one of a 3-part series, each accompanied by its own DVD. There is also a compilation book that is priced below the cost of the three, but does not include the 3 DVDs. The novice player, or someone like me who has remained a little stuck at the beginner/intermediate level, would be better served spending the money on the individual book/DVDs. Buyers should keep in mind, there is no magic bullet when it comes to the ukulele. The lessons taught in Beginning Ukulele require attention and persistence (deliberate practice in response to weakness). Determined players, whether newbies or stuck in a rut, will find it very useful.

Great Book for those new to the Ukulele

This book and the accompanying DVD are a great resource for those wanting to learn to play the ukulele. This book will take you from the very basics of first starting to play to the point of being able to make some pretty good music. It introduces you to a variety of styles and techniques, as well as to basic music theory. I would recommend this book to anyone from a complete beginner to someone who has been playing for a while but wants to become more technically proficient or expand their capabilities.

Good lessons, but too difficult to follow along.

Very hard to follow the video with the book, and the chapters are numbered different. It moves along quickly, but the pause option helps. As a beginner I found this frustrating. Though, he is awesome and in time I hope to go back and figure it all out.

An excellent introduction to power system analysis!

The author's presentation of power system analysis is very appropriate for those studying the subject for the first time. Concepts are presented clearly and the examples illustrate well the discussion in the text. The mathematical level is easily within reach for senior electrical engineering students. One very helpful feature of this book is that answers are supplied for practically all of the end-of-the-chapter problems. Also, the author makes good use of MATLAB even from Chapter 1, and SIMULINK on the book's latter part.

A Classic of Contemporary Moral Philosophy

The first chapter of Mackie's Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong is the locus classicus for error theories in contemporary meta-ethics. There he argues that ordinary moral discourse and thought involve an assumption that there are what he calls "objective values," and that this assumption is false. Consequently, ordinary moral thought and language are infected by an error that precludes any ordinary moral claims and thoughts from being true.
Mackie first argues for a cognitivist interpretation of moral language. In other words, he argues that ordinary moral claims purport to describe facts about the world. In particular, ordinary moral language and thought purport to describe facts about objective moral values. What are objective moral values? They have two defining characteristics: (i) mind-independent existence (think of how chairs, trees, people, and electrons exist), and (ii) "intrinsic and categorical prescriptivity": that is, they are such that the mere apprehension of them will motivate a person to act in a certain way. The former characteristic is the source of their objectivity; the latter is the source of their normativity.
But, he claims, we have good reason to think that no such things exist. Mackie's fundamental worry about these putative objective values is that these things are especially "queer," that they are unlike any other things we have good reason to think exist. As I understand Mackie, underlying his worries about the queerness of these putative entities is his perception of a tension in their nature. He appears to believe that the objectivity of these putative entities is in tension with their intrinsic and categorical action-guidingness. That is, it is unclear to Mackie how something that exists as a mind-independent part of reality could have the sort of influence on human behavior that these objective values are supposed to have. It is unclear how something could be both objective and normative. The things that scientists study and that we encounter in the everyday world simply don't have this sort of categorical action-guidingness built into them. So, given the naturalistic conception of the world that Mackie favors, we have good a posteriori reasons to doubt the existence of objective moral values.
But, if Mackie is correct about the nature of ordinary moral thought and language, this commits us to regarding ordinary moral thought and language as involving a very fundamental sort of error, an error of presupposing that objective moral values exist. Mackie then completes his error theory by providing an explanation of our tendency to make this error, to mistakenly suppose that ordinary moral thought and language involve our successfully coming to know about the sorts of things he claims don't exist.
Mackie's book doesn't end here, however. Indeed, this is only the first chapter, and Mackie goes on to cover a wide range of territory in normative ethics and meta-ethics, along with a few issues in metaphysics (the existence of God and freedom of the will) that have some bearing on moral issues. In fact, despite his worries about the objectivity of morality, Mackie goes on to defend a substitute for morality, one that looks quite a bit like a broadly consequentialist moral theory, and he even weighs in on several controversial moral issues that are still with us. In short, in a little over two hundred pages of exceptionally clear prose, Mackie covers just about everything of interest in moral philosophy.
This book is, of course, essential reading for anyone interested in meta-ethics. Understanding some of the material and its importance may require some background knowledge, but enough of the book is more generally accessible that it also constitutes a good wide-ranging introduction to issues in both meta-ethics and normative ethics for a person with some background in philosophy (and perhaps for the general reader). Furthermore, the book, while not a work of history, is sufficiently informed about the history of the issues it discusses to provide the reader with an entry into study of the history of the subject.
If you're especially interested in Mackie's meta-ethical views, you should attempt to track down a copy of Morality and Objectivity (Ted Honderich, ed.), as it includes interesting and important reactions to Mackie's views by some major names (John McDowell, Simon Blackburn, R. M. Hare, Bernard Williams, et al.) in moral philosophy.

A Classic of 20th Century Ethics Indeed...

It might be read as an introduction to Ethics, but it isn't one. It is rather one of the most important works in 20th century ethics.

Mackie's book was revolutionary since being the first one to combine anti-realism (no objectively prescriptive values in the world) with cognitivism (the meaning of ethical statements can be true or false). Most of the previous anti-realists were anti-realists mostly implicitly, only because of being non-cognitivsts. Mackie has a different view which in my opinion is much more closer to the truth. The book also contains his error theory (people have a disposition to see their value judgments as objective). While the reviewer cdtreyer as the mainstream tradition have concentrated on Mackie's error theory I think it is much less important than the denial of the objective values and the justification of the role of morality in quasi-contractual terms.

Mackie's views on positive morality are justified by quasi-contractual (he discusses Plato's Protagoras, Hobbes and Hume) means and would combine very well with evolutionary perspectives. The discussion on the content of normative views is just a brief sketch, but this isn't really what this book is about anyway. Anyone who claims that the contents of the first part of the book undermine the contents of the second should read chapter 5 again and again and again. That there are no objective values in the world does not mean that there can't be right or wrong - it simply must be (or rather already has largely been) invented and constructed.

If you are interested in ethics you simply need to read this small, but important book which, while not being an introduction is still quite simple and very elegantly written. Besides the main content you will also get to read a great discussion on the meaning of the good (in debate with the classical Geach-Hare discussion found in Philippa Foot's "Theories of Ethics"), discussion on the is-ought problem and its flawed Searlean solution (also found in Foots collection), a chapter on univerzalisability of moral judgments (contra Hare) and on the frontiers of ethics: voluntary actions, determinism, law, politics, religion.

Father of Error Theory

This book is the father of all error theory books. He originates some of the central critiques of moral thought and discourse that guys like Richard Garner rely on (see also: Beyond Morality). They think there is something bizarre about morality's commitment to categorical reasons (things that you ought or ought not to do regardless of what your desires happen to be). They think moral properties are queer because he says that don't fit into a naturalistic worldview and because they are thought to supervene on non-moral properties (i.e. the moral properties "fix" the moral facts... so the non-moral fact of kicking a puppy is always accompanied by the property of wrongness).

As you may notice, the theory presented in this book does not agree with me. Error theory argues that morality is systemically erroneous... what do we do with moral thought and discourse then? If Mackie thinks supervenient relationships are flawed, exactly how do ordinary natural facts determine the moral facts? He argues for conservationism (rather than eliminativism) because he recognizes the instrinsic vlue of morality, although I don't see that working. I agree more with the ideas of David Boonin, David Enoch, and Michael Huemer.

This is not a book on on "How to get laid" it is about becoming an authentic man who is a true lover of women and the beauty found in all of them.

As soon as I began reading it, I was completely engrossed and didn't stop until completion.

Relationships NOT for Dummies

Tao Of The Gigolo is not the read I feared. It does not delve into a pseudo-academic psychoanalyses of the women who retain the services of male escorts, and it is not a "how to" for the aspiring gigolo. Tao is more of a philosophical discussion about relationships and given the word "relationship" and what constitutes romantic love carry different freight for different people; Tao offers more for those approaching it with intellectual and emotional curiosity. While written almost exclusively for men, the female reader who struggles with understanding and achieving a modicum of success with the male human stands to benefit from it. For men interested in mastering the art of manliness and seduction, Tao should be your bible. Those skimming the rich narrative in search of five bullet points to score a hook-up needn't bother.

This book will entice you. This book will seduce you. It will beguile and enchant. It will incite you and prompt debate. It will cause you concern and provoke flashes of inspiration. In the same way a run away romance will sweep you off your feet, this book is difficult to put down. The Tao of the Gigolo itself is an example of seduction. If you are coming to this from the right place, you will power through it like I did. For those of you who seek truth, this book will provoke you the deep 'YES' that Vin has so clearly articulated in such a wide range of areas of human relationships.

The mark of someone who offers true value, is one who understands how to share it. For less than the price of two beers at a bar, Vin sits down with us and shares with us his lifetime of knowledge. He opens the door to a world many of us know little about. He presents his ideas in a clear, straightforward and easily digestible manner. Like all great texts, the book is short and to the point.
