About the Author
Clare Fletcher and Daniela Herrmann are Senior Researchers at NHS Protect (responsible for countering corruption in the UK health service), and work with the University of Portsmouth to deliver a bespoke postgraduate degree: MSc in Counter Fraud and Counter Corruption Studies. Together, they make up NHS Protect's Research Unit, which carries out research to support evidence-based policy-making on a wide range of counter fraud and corruption issues. Both have academic backgrounds in International Relations. Clare Fletcher has a keen interest in transparency and accountability issues, particularly as in relation to the management of public services. She has skills and experience in policy research, analysis and evaluation, having worked for a number of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK, across a broad range of multidisciplinary policy areas. Clare graduated from the University of Birmingham with an MA in Political Science Research Methods and a BSocSc in Political Science and International Studies. Daniela Herrmann has a keen interest in international anti-corruption research, coupled with skills and experience in policy analysis, evaluation and advocacy. Before joining NHS Protect, Daniela has worked with the UN Development Fund for Women in Beijing and with parliamentarians in Westminster and Brussels. Chapter One The God of Creation (Genesis 1) Like many a modern parent faced with raising children in a confusing world of drugs, disasters, and mind-bending ideas, Moses must have had his concerns. Certainly God did. The book of Exodus tells us about the beginnings of the nation of Israel under the leadership of Moses, the man of God. It records their last-minute rescue through the sea and their camping trip in the desert of Sinai. But that is just the beginning. These former slaves must enter into a land inhabited by people who would make Hell’s Angels seem like Sunday school teachers. As the patriarch lay down to sleep at night, he must have worried about this people he was leading. They had every mark of early adolescence about them, yet they needed a stability few adults ever achieve. Sure, they had witnessed God’s power to plague and decimate the Egyptians. They had passed through the sea without muddying their feet. But had they really become the people of Yahweh in heart and mind?

How do you prepare a people to avoid the degrading tentacles of a deteriorated culture? How do you lay a foundation for a worthwhile life? What alloy do you use to strengthen their discernment and motivate them toward a better way? The answer is torah. Torah simply means instruction. The Torah came to be the name for the first five books of the Bible, Genesis through Deuteronomy. As we open the Bible we encounter that instruction—teaching given to prepare the Israelite people for their encounter with gross paganism. But oh, what teaching! No dull classroom recitation here. These are stories. And understanding the history in them is not the boring calisthenics of learning names, dates, and places but involvement with dynamic and crucial events giving us insight into life itself. THE WORLD OF GENESIS ONE

So, let’s join Israel in the desert. Pack up your tent. Leave your modernized campers behind. Come as you are—and bring an appetite for manna! As Israelites, we owe our allegiance to Yahweh God in a world where many gods are worshiped. Their names are strange to our modern ears: Baal, Molech, Ashtoreth, Anath, and El. They have not survived the millennia, though they were drawing rave reviews in Palestine at the time. Stories about these gods form the belief-system of the world around us. These gods are like most people—and worse! They play and drink, and drink too much. They fight, deceive, and engage in licentious behavior. Just to give you the idea, let’s take a quick X-rated look at El, the father of the gods. El is a brutal, bloody tyrant. He not only dethrones his own father (not an unknown temptation for king’s sons) but also castrates him. He slays his own favorite son, and cuts off his daughter’s head. He also has a reputation for seduction of women.1

But perhaps El is the exception. Certainly the goddesses must possess fine and gentle spirits! Well ... no. Consider the goddess Anath, called the "queen of heaven" and "mistress of all the gods."2 She, too, is sensuous and violent. Here is a description (not recommended for children) of gentle Anath at work:

Anath hews in pieces and rejoices,

her liver extends with laughter,

her heart is filled with joy; for in Anath’s hand is success;

for she plunges her knees in the blood of the swift ones,

her thighs in the gore of the fast ones.3

While the gods fight one another, Anath enjoys the carnage. If her father, the god El, does not grant Anath her request for a palace for Baal, then she assures us:

I shall trample him down like a lamb to the ground;

I shall bring down his hoary head with blood to the grave,

the gray hair of his old age with gore.4

No doubt this tale did a lot to encourage honoring one’s father and mother in Canaanite culture!

Intrigue and murder, deceit and incest are what you get from these gods.5 Israel’s Ten Commandments are broken without hesitation by these supposed divinities. These gods were not sterling examples. Could belief in them produce sterling civilizations? THE NEED FOR THE TRUE CREATION STORY These thoughts bring us face-to-face with a sobering fact. People become like the gods they worship. Their gods are their models. It would be disastrous if Israel thought Yahweh her God was like other gods. In fact, God warns his people that if they become as depraved as the people of Canaan, he will eject them from Palestine as well (Lev. 18:24–30). The Bible, then, begins with the most essential element of Torah—the real story about the true God—so the people of God may live a free and wholesome life.

But if we’re trying to learn about God, why tell the story of creation? Doesn’t that center on learning about the world? About origins? Geology? Not really. The Bible begins at the beginning not because Moses is a history buff obsessed with ancient chronology but because understanding God’s creation of the world gives us a clear picture of what God is like. Baylis Is Insightful And Practical

This book is an excellent survey of the Old Testament. Baylis traces each book of the Old Testament in its own theological development of how Jesus is to be the coming Messiah. I highly recommend From The Cross To Creation for college students looking to understand the Old Testament because Baylis' writing style is smooth and easy to read. I also recommend this book to seminary students as a scholarly work because Baylis' footnotes are extensive and provides for wide-ranging supplemental research. As such this book makes a wonderful Bible study. I have used Baylis' work in such a fashion with a college group and his insights were well received. I believe this book is worthy of a five star rating.

This book opens up the world of the Old Testement, showing how God in his infinite wisdom has paved the way for Christ ever since creation. Baylis sheds much light on the prophecies that came true in Christ, and the beautiful love story that God has written for us. A wonderful tool for any wishing to study and explore the Old Testement.

Over the years I have kept a copy of the Essays by my favorite reading chair to be enjoyed at random, particularly in the middle of the night when Entropy seems to hold the upper hand. They exercise a remarkable calming effect.

Seduced by the idea of having a complete set of all the Essays, I initially opted for the complete Screech translation, but found it wooden and pedantic. I moved to the Cohen translation, which does not include all of the Essays, but has all of the major ones and is far more enjoyable.

What a wonderful book to have on the bookshelf. It took me about a year and half to read it, as I would leisurely consume an essay or two while between books, or if I was just looking for a pleasant respite from my other reading. Montaigne is every bit as readable, fascinating and wise as the judgment of history has deemed him.

I use this book in my lean manufacturing class. It has good practical examples and a useful method for doing lean using the value stream mapping approach. I highly receommend this book for the first timers. I think someone who has no experience could get started using this book.

Two Months Of Hell Recorded

This is one of the most devastating memoirs to come out of WWII. Condensed into the period of April to June 1945 the diary records the plight of the citizens of Berlin during the Russian advance and occupation. It truly captures the atmosphere of chaos and the means of survival and coping of the citizens with particular emphasis on the women who were left at the mercy of the conquering troops. While the first impressions are the horrors and ravages of war visited on the citizens,as I read on I was amazed at the at how quickly the author adapted herself to her new surroundings and how quickly the city began to emerge from it's nightmare and attempted to return to some degree of structured normal life.
Apparently it was not well received when first published because people were not disposed to feel sympathy for the Germans so soon after the Nazi era. It clearly belongs on the shelf of any student of WWII alongside Hiroshima and The Diary Of Anne Frank.

Berlin hell under the Red 'liberators'

The anonymous author of this fine wartime diary is amost certainly Marta Hillers, a former journalist, who died in June 2001 at the age of 90.

Although published in the US and UK mid 1950s it was largely ignored by a world not ready to see Germans as victims too. Since being republished, after the author's death, this book has become a belated bestseller -and deservedly so.

It shows the Red Army for the rabble they were-watches, booze and women were considered the booty of war and with a thug like Stalin as a political leader no restraints were placed on the animals from the steppes. Estimates of rape vary from 90,000 -130,000 in the climatic struggle for Berlin, according to medical records, with over 10,000 German females perishing as a result of the animalistic attacks on them, or by suicide or injury as a consequence of such assaults. All told the Red Army raped over two million women as they rampaged across eastern Europe-a figure that included Jewish women who had escaped death in the Nazi camps only to suffer again at the hands of these Red 'liberators.'

The author, an articulate professional, who had toured the Soviet Union before the war, and knew some of the language, describes the orgy of rape, and after having thrice experienced pack rape at the hands of such scum she sought out a Red Army officer -prostituting herself to be protected from the pack.

The author brilliantly describes the breakdown in Berlin society in this diary, starting on the 20 April 1945 (Hitler's birthday) before the Reds arrive in her suburb, and ending on the 16 June - just over a month after peace was restored in Europe.

There may be some people who think the German civilians deserved what they got -but this reviewer is not amongst them. Depravity is depravity, regardless of who is on the receiving end and the rationale for fighting the war was to stand against such heinous war crimes, not to add to the list of the atrocities.

The Red Army's record in World War II is a disgrace and outraged comments from Russian spokesman convince no-one. It is appopriate that the fine British historian, Antony Beevor, has a preface in this republished version. His more recent work on the Battle for Berlin, was attacked as a 'slander' against the Red Army by the then Russian ambassador to Britain. No doubt that Russian apologist would also consider this diary a fabrication (a charge levelled earlier). Still, for years the murder of the Polish officer class in the Katyn Forest, by the communists, was also labelled a 'fabrication' while the continued imprisonment of the Hero of the Holocaust, Sweden's Raoul Wallenberg, was similarly regarded as 'false' western propaganda.

The courage of this woman, and many others, in war shattered Berlin contrasts greatly with the rank record of the Red Army and is a must read by anyone interested in the impact of total war on a great city and its people.

This book tells the forgotten story of the average German citizen's experience during WWII. On par with Anne Frank's diary in terms of historical significance, poignant life experiences, and the sheer deconstruction of society during war. Of course, since it is an adult's perspective, the themes are on a more mature level. The writing is excellent, the images searing and moving. I can't believe this book is no longer in print or that it is not better known.

A wake-up call for governing boards

In his John Grisham-esque style, Dr. Mott takes the reader through the trials of a very qualified and determined CEO as he struggles to lead his institution, dragging a dysfunctional board along with him. Classroom Lessons Transcribed

This book is actually Dr. Campbell Titchener's Feature Writing class lecture notes transcribed, and it is quite good. It's also useful for working newspaper folks to use as a reference book, to remind themselves, for instance, to include all the necessary components for a review of specific sorts of artistic endeavors.
Dr. Titchener read aloud much student work in the class I took, and he pulled no punches in evaluating the results. There was one unfortunate woman who could not capably put one word in front of another, yet she bubbled constantly about what a great writer she intended to be, all the books and plays and articles she was going to author. Dr. Titchener one day pronounced her work "trite" (he was absolutely correct), and it was extremely amusing to see the woman's cluelessly dismissive reaction, her declaration that he was "an idiot."
About three-fourths of the way into the semester, Dr. Titchener had an uncommon experience in his own life, and he wrote a short feature about it, which he read to the class. The response was brutal; students viciously ripped the piece up one page and down the other, and poor Dr. Titchener just sat there absorbing it all... sorta like body blows in a boxing match. He was the only college professor I ever encountered who had the guts to expose himself to an open-forum critique from his students, and you've really got to admire someone who has the fortitude to do that.

Good textbook for a Great Class

I took a class called "Reviewing the Arts" and this was our textbook, heavily supplemented by actual reviews from major newspapers. The book covers art, theater, music and the like. It's very readable and I only noticed one error in the name of the Martha Graham dance company, and apparently it's an error that has been there through several editions.

Overall, this would be a good read for a student or someone who is interested in writing reviews as a freelancer or for a hobby.

The first period (1888-1901) deals with the initial attempts to represent the Chinese in fiction as the bad Other by the early Bulletin writers, the Australian responses to the rise of the fear of "the Yellow Peril" in "invasion literature," and the imperialist will to power over the Chinese in writings set in China by Anglo-Australian writers. Apart from pursuing the issue of the continued fear and stereotyping of the Chinese in popular writing, the second period (1902-1949) introduces a new phenomenon of literary Sinophilism that dichotomizes the representation of the Chinese and examines the image of Chinese women. The third period (1950-1988) focuses on the problem of politicisation that polarizes literary attitudes towards the Chinese, and discusses Australia's "Asian writing" as an extension of colonial writing that continues to "Other" the Chinese and explores multicultural writing as an alternative means of representation.
