Too idillic. Assumes very specific circumstances and expands from pre-set parameters; this is simply not how practical situations unfold. Had to buy for graduate school. Graduate school was selling me Confederate Bonds in the form of a degree. Anything associated with the experience is therefore party to fraud. Mr. Connor, disassociate yourself with university coursework and I will bump you up a few stars.

Leadership in management depends on connection between people. "Change policy is the set of assumptions, diagnostic conclusions, and guidelines that serve as the basis for amanaging specific change." (p. 169) The center is diagnosis of what is wrong. Action is key. The book covers methods for change thoroughly, practically and in detail. There are many straight-forward charts and diagrams from getting started to final examination. There are specific activities for change managers including how to sell ideas and Total Quality Management. The book is an excellent read in a highly competitive market. Eric J. Lindblom PhD Harvard

Descartes and the Scholastics Revisted

Marleen Rozemond's Descartes' Dualism is a solid piece of scholarship but primarily of interest for Descartes scholars. In recent years, a discernible trend in Descartes scholarship has been to argue that Descartes is less innovative and revolutionary than has previously been supposed and to attempt to root his distinctive teachings (and to solve the problems evoked by those teachings) in those of the Scholastics to whose views he was exposed in his youth. One aspect of this view has been a tendency to reinterpret Descartes' doctrine of the mind/body relation, sketched in the sixth meditation and discussed in his letters, most prominently in his first two letters to Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia by attempting to show that Descartes held a hylomorphic conception of the human person rather than the traditional substance dualist account. Rozemond's conclusion is that, despite Descartes' use of scholastic terminology (e.g. he refers to the soul as the form of the body) Descartes is not a hylomorphist and remains committed to substance dualism largely because of his overriding commitment to the metaphysical picture dictated by the New Science. I myself am in complete agreement with Rozemond on this point, which after all is the mainstream position in the history of Descartes scholarship.

Although much has been written about what Descartes should have said to Elizabeth about the notorious interaction problem, rather less attention has been paid to what Descartes actual tells her, which is that the way in which body influences mind and mind influences body is a mystery that we have no prospect of understanding, since it is both unique and irreducible: for us, at least, the concept of mind/body interaction is a simple one not further analyzable into parts or explicable in terms of some sort of intervening mechanism. Nevertheless, since sound philosophy establishes that the mind and the body are separate substances of incompatible natures and experience testifies to the fact of mind/body interaction in no uncertain terms, we must simply accept mind/body interaction as a fact. Although Descartes does his best to circumscribe the mystery by localizing it to a single point in the brain (the pineal gland) the fact remains that he has no account of mind/brain interaction to offer and sees no need to offer one. Anyone who has followed the philosophy of mind since Descartes' time is in a position to confirm his view about this; every theory about the relation of mind and body breaks down precisely at the point where this mystery is addressed.

Difficult, but interesting

This book s a complete work that explains Descartes' thought of body and mind. This book mainly representates the "strong" dualism, the traditional way to understand Descartes' philosophy.

The book explains also the basic concepts, but mostly it is very advanced philosophy and it is definitely not any kind on basic course.

The book was quite hard to read to me (I am not a native english speaker), so I recommend it especially to people that have a strong background on both philosophy and english language.

This book may not be what the average fan of film musicals is after, but there are plenty of picture books and reference works on the musical for such readers. This is the most significant and wide-ranging study of the musical as a narrative and cinematic form anyone has yet attempted. No other serious work on the musical comes close, and despite another reviewer's complaint about academic writing, Altman's prose is in fact clear and witty -- which is not to say that he doesn't work through some sophisticated ideas: indeed, half of the book is a consideration of the notion of genre itself, with the musical the specific example for the book's deeper investigation. But for all the "serious" thought and research that went into this work, one always senses Altman's enthusiasm about the musical. Academic writing gets a bad rap: this is what academic writing is supposed to do -- explore, expand, and force the reader to grapple with, rather than just accept, ideas.

Brings the study of the musical to another level

Finally, I found in "The American Film Musical" a critic who takes this genre seriously and has worked to understand its intricate and complex layers and patterns. Altman divides his study into three "subgenres" - the fairy tale musical, the show musical, and the folk musical - and demonstrates how most every example of the genre falls into one of these categories to some extent.

As well as being devoted to the musical, Altman also provides a method for genre study in general, which some readers will want to skim or even skip if their only interest is research on the musical. However, to truly understand the workings of the genre it is beneficial to read the whole book, because the musical is surely one of the most complex art forms ever, and Altman does so much to break into the problems that many critics have ignored that it's worth being enlightened as to his process.

The book makes you reconsider all the presuppositions you may have about the film musical and what constitutes a musical. The patterns and workings he reveals, particularly with regard to the dual-focus narrative, are fascinating: instead of just the old "how many songs?" question, Altman uses the criteria of "coupling" to form his theory of what constitues a musical.

A definite YES for anyone searching through the dark for a more modern study of the genre.

Seminal Text on the Classical Hollywood Musical

I love Altman's categorization of the genre: the show musical, the folk musical, and the fairytale musical. I've cited this text in almost every major research paper I've written in the last two years. Not too verbose, very clear, and a very interesting year. I also love the chart at the back which breaks down all of the Hollywood musicals up until the book's publishing date into these categories.
