About the Author
Rebecca L. Johnson has always loved to read, and her tastes in books in grade school were quite a mix adventure stories, animal stories, lots of nonfiction science, but also mysteries, science fiction, and some adult books, too. She remembers reading Victor Hugo's Les Miserables when she was 10 years old. It was a challenge, but she became so engrossed in the story that she could hardly put it down.
Rebecca started writing books shortly after she graduated from college, first college biology textbooks and then special high-interest pieces on different science topics that went into middle school and high school science textbooks. Her first book for kids was about pheromones, chemicals that some types of animals use to communicate. Lerner published that book back in the late 1980s, and they have published quite a few more of Rebecca's books over the years.
Doing research for books has taken Rebecca to a lot of amazing places where she's had fantastic opportunities to work with real scientists and at times help them with their research. Over the years she's spent about 9 months in Antarctica and many weeks scuba diving with researchers on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. She has also traveled as deep as 2500 feet below the ocean s surface in the Johnson-Sea-Link submersible, several times. The world is full of wonderful places, but visiting the deep sea was a life-changing experience, and Rebecca has never looked at anything in quite the same way since.
Most of her books so far have been nonfiction, but Rebecca is working on a young adult novel at the moment. It s quite a change, but she has to admit that it s really fun to be able to make things up!

Science is Fun!

From the compelling title to the extraordinary illustrations, WHEN LUNCH FIGHTS BACK: WICKEDLY CLEVER ANIMAL DEFENSES by Rebecca L. Johnson is an informational book that immediately grabs the reader’s attention. Even the chapter titles like “slip-sliming away” and “here’s blood in your eye” are designed to shock and entertain.
The author uses a short narrative to introduce each creature. Then, a “science behind the story” segment describes the species’ method of defense featuring a scientist who studies how the defense system works.
Quality photographs and informational boxes bring attention to each featured creature. The glossary at the end of the book defines key vocabulary. Suggested books, websites, and videos are provided to extend the experience.
Aimed at upper elementary grades, this book will fit well into the school library collection. Containing a balance of entertaining narratives along with quality informative segments, it’s is sure to attract a wide range of readers.

Here's Blood in Your Eye--a delightfully gross science book!

High kid-appeal in this one! Reading about the fascinating ways that animals defend themselves is pretty addictive. Strong writing and mostly terrific photos (though there were a couple where I couldn't discern what was happening even with helpful arrows).
Each animal gets two features. In the first one, a present-tense scene plays out between predator and would-be prey. Dramatic language and great tension make these scenes fun to read. In the second spread, The Science Behind the Story, we get more direct, scientific information featuring quotes from a scientific authority as well as an explanation of how the defense works--and often how it was discovered or figured out by scientists. This dual approach works really well.
My only minor gripe was in the hairy frog scenario. The whole scene plays out between frog and otter, but then the caption for the otter photo reveals, "It's likely that these otters try to eat hairy frogs, although scientists have never caught one in the act." That made the scene feel too much like fiction to me.
But overall, a very enjoyable read.

The book itself is fun to read with many interesting pictures

The book itself is fun to read with many interesting pictures. However, the Kindle version is more like a PDF version of the book. So if I fit the whole page on my Android tablet screen, the text looks too small. If I increase the page size (I cannot increase the text size only), then the page gets cut off in the screen. Very frustrating.
