90-Day Quick Plan
Eighteen years ago a man challenged me to not complain for 90 days straight. I couldn't complain about anything, not food, not the weather, nothing. That changed my life. Some people say you can change a habit in 21 days. I question whether that is long enough. While 21 days may be too short, an entire year is too long. Think about it, most people can't keep their New Year's resolutions for even two weeks. People often think, “I have all year to get going on that.” 90 days is a sweet spot. It is a short enough time frame to stay absolutely focused, and yet it is long enough to get more done than most people get done in a whole year. When I lost my weight, the first 90 days were the most important. In those three months, I lost thirty-three pounds, but more importantly, my thinking about food, exercise, and how I spent my time was transformed. Everything changed in 90 days.

Most strategic planning is done at an off-site retreat, yet provides little momentum toward action. Instead of an annual planning session, try making a 90-Day Quick Plan. Every 90 days we encourage everyone on our team to create a 90-Day Quick Plan. It gives leaders and teams an actionable framework that provides clarity and leads to tangible results both personally and professionally.

Here's how to make it work. Pick an area of your business or life that you'd like to address, and then ask six questions. The plan should take less than 30 minutes to create.

Question 1: Where am I? If you do not know where you are today, you cannot know where you would like to be in the future. (If you are doing a 90-Day Quick Plan as a team, ask, “Where are we?” and use “we” in the following questions as well.) Ask this question and you will be able to quickly identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. For example, where am I in my relationship with my kids? Where am I in my health? Where am I in comparison to expected sales? Where are we as far as the number of people we are reaching with our message or product?

Question 2: Where am I going in 90 days? Remember, it is not one year or five years like many strategic plans. Thinking about your answer in question 1, where would you like to be in 90 days? Write a clear, quantifiable (numerical if possible) goal. You will likely accomplish more than you thought in just 90 days!

Question 3: Why am I going? If the “why” is strong enough, the plan does not need to be perfect. If a building is burning and my kids are in it, I don't need to know every detail—I'm going in because my “why” is so strong. When your team is motivated and unified, they'll do the little things differently. They'll stay passionate and focused, and they'll finish.

Question 4: How are we going to get there? How? Keep asking how? until your team commits to taking specific actions.

Question 5: How are we going to get there? I press people to ask how? until they have come up with a specific action they will take starting today or tomorrow at the latest.

Question 6: How are we going to get there? I have found people must ask how? at least three times before they are clear enough. It may take asking how? seven times in order to get enough clarity. The point is don't stop asking how until you or your team has decided on a specific action that will be taken starting today or tomorrow.

Making It Happen
I remember when I really got this idea of asking “how?” three times. I was training and consulting with one of the biggest heath care organizations in North America. They needed change! They were losing funding and patients. We were toward the end of our Trust Edge Experience. One hundred fifty top people including the CEO and senior leadership team were all seated at round tables. Each table had defined a specific challenge they were going to tackle. I remember asking one table full of top leaders about what they needed to take action on in order to grow and be more trusted. The table leader said, “We need to be clearer.”

I said, “How will you be clearer?”

After brainstorming with his group, the table leader said, “We are going to communicate more.”

I said, “How?”

After more brainstorming, he said, “We are going to hold each other accountable.”

I said, “How?”

The table, seated with bright minds and fine leaders, had to be pushed three times in order to realize they needed a more specific action plan. They worked together to create a plan for communicating more often and more clearly. An important piece of their plan was how they were going to hold each other accountable to this effort. They were able to start following their plan the very next day.

On a personal level, when I decided to lose weight, I kept asking “how?” until I went from “eat less and exercise more” to defining fifteen specific actionable ideas I could implement on a daily basis.

With greater clarity around your 90-day plan, you will gain the trust of your team and bottom-line results will follow.

Packed with actionable strategies!

This book is for all those who didn't have / make the time to read David Allen's Getting Things Done or did so and loved the philosophy but now need simple actionable steps to improve their productivity.

This book is packed with 35 productivity tips and is a must read for anyone wanting to get more out of their day while maintaining relationships and increasing Trust! The 90 Day Quick plan and DMA strategies alone (Tips 1 & 2) would make this book worth the price. Keep reading and you will find actionable strategy after actionable strategy...

Good tips! Quick read!

As the saying goes, "there's nothing new under the sun", so don't expect this book to be filled to the brim with undiscovered tips. However it is a good mix of new twists on things that may be familiar concepts and reminders of things we know we should be doing but aren't.

Horsager has developed some ideas as to how to get started applying the Trust Edge daily. Although, the strategies are simple they don't always apply to the business I'm in. But there were some 'take-a-ways' that I could modify, to fit my needs.

decent and worth having... but nothing more

I did find this book extremely useful and have used it as my definitive reference for XQuery while working with real-world problems. The book was not only informative, comprehensive and filled with useful and easy to follow examples, but also realistic. You will find that any of the basic questions you have can be answered somewhere in this book (of course advanced questions often rely on the specific implementation, which is out of scope for the book and I recommend you hit online resources for those).

I do recommend reading/buying/using this book in your day-to-day work with XML in cooperation with an XQuery implementation. It's a little dry of information for advanced readers, but novice to intermediate readers will find it amazingly helpful.

However... this book has one major shortcoming: it is horribly written and organized.

The book seems to be written in a manner where the author knew exactly what they were talking about but didn't take the time to organize it or write a second and third draft. It feels like a "once-and-done" text and is inconsistent with coverage between all the various topics (for example: the structure of simple path queries is discussed sporadically while simple work with sorting and grouping is gone into a level of overkill in detail).

Good book to have on your shelf (just like the little SQL, Vi, Regex, etc. booklets we all have), but you've definitely got to break out the PostIt Notes to make sure you can find the information throughout the book.

It definitely needs more information here and there, but it's a great place to (at the least) start off and look for basic information.

Best XQuery book available to date!

I've had this XQuery book for about a week now and it has already helped me immensely! Priscilla Walmsley (who was a member of the W3C XML Schema Working Group and I believe the XQuery Working Group as well) is an excellent writer and teacher. Her writing style is clear and concise, as anyone who read her earlier Definitive XML Schema book already knows.

"XQuery" is roughly 2/3 tutorial and 1/3 reference (by page counts). The tutorial material is thoughtfully divided into 25 bite-size chapters. The topics progress nicely from an overview and basics to important concepts such as namespace handlng, modules and static typing. The book includes 5 chapters that focus on handling specific data types (e.g, "Working with Strings"). You don't have to know XSLT but knowing XPath may be helpful. OTOH, XPath is covered in Chap. 4. There is even a chapter targeted at SQL users. I also appreciate the carefully chosen running example that is representative of many XML structures. The book also benefits from special icons indicating tips, gotchas, and compatibility issues. Longtime XML geek Simon St.Laurent was the O'Reilly editor, which is another big plus.

Walmsley has also created an incredibly useful reference site of XQuery functions, both those defined by the W3C specs and numerous others that she wrote. Others may contribute as well. [...]

I have several older XQuery books by various publishers but this book is by far the best. I highly recommend it to web developers, database developers, and data architects with even a modest XML background.

First Impressions

My first impression of this book is that it is fantastic. Just flip through the first chapter and you'll see references to code snippets and valuable explanations of XQuery. This book is what I was seeking. The author knows the reader has an interest in the subject and does not waste time explaining what XML is and why one would want to query it etc. This book is not selling the technology. It teaches it which is a lesson the author of "Querying XML" could learn from.

I am very happy thus far with this book.

A Sexy and Suspenseful Page Turner

Wow, hot hot hot

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story is a different style for Kelly Moran and she has amazed me with it so if you want a truly hot love story then check this book out – I loved it from start to finish.

Noah and Raven have been friends for ten years, theirs is a non sexual/touching friendship and it has been driving Noah mad, as he has been secretly yearning after Raven for years, Raven however has felt safe and secure with him and looks forward to his company. Until one Friday night when everything changes.

Noah has secrets and Raven has issues and this book deals with both of these with flair, it was great how you found out about both of these characters and their pasts and the bits in between.

I would definitely recommend this book as ‘A MUST READ’. I must say Kelly Moran’s books have always held my attention so I was pleased to receive this to review, as I love her old writing style and this new more erotic book was no exception – CONGRATULATIONS Kelly on this fabulous new book.

Neurovirology has been significantly bolstered by modern technologies such as PCR and MRI with direct impact on isolating viruses and advancing therapeutics based on molecular medicine. These advances are particularly important today with the introduction of emerging and re-emerging diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Nipah encephalitis and the appearance of West Nile encephalitis in the western hemisphere. This volume in the Handbook of Clinical Neurology provides a complete review of the history, science and current state of neurovirology. Since the development of PCR in 1998 and its application to the central nervous system, we have a much deeper understanding of the impact of viruses on the central nervous system and a more direct link towards developing antiviral drugs. This volume is a comprehensive reference and review of, the science and clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of viruses of the brain and central nervous system and will be a trusted resource for scholars, scientists, neuroscientists, neurologists, virologists, and pharmacologists working on neurovirology.

About the Author
I graduated with a B Sc in physics from McGill University in Montreal in 1978. I obtained my PhD in physics from Brown University in 1983. After postdoctoral work at Purdue University, I entered medical school at the University of Miami in Florida, graduating with my MD in 1987. I trained in clinical neurology at Northwestern University and Duke University, followed by postdoctoral training in neurovirology at the University of Pennsylvania, 1991-1994. Since 1994 I have been on the faculty at the Department of Neurology at Wayne State University.

My laboratory work had been in the virology of the nervous system and in viral immunology with emphasis on the cytomegaloviruses. Clinically my interests had been in viral encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, and HIV of the nervous system. From 1993 until my retirement in 2005, I was the National Program Director for Neurology for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Our goal was to have neurological services coordinated nationally. During that time we were able to establish national centers of excellence for Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Just after my retirement, a coalition of organizations led by the American Academy of Neurology convinced the Congress to establish national VA centers of excellence in epilepsy. I am presently interested in historical subjects including historical virology: see for example To Catch a Virus, Booss and August, ASM Press, 2013; and Neurovirology in the Elsevier series Handbook of Clinical Neurology, eds, Tselis and Booss, forthcoming, 2014.

Excellent overview for children

I bought this book for my seven year old son, in the hope that he would work his way into it over time (recommended age is from 9). He is able to read quite a lot of the text at this stage, with a bit of help. This is great for his reading practice.
Most importantly it is a book he wants to read. The photographs are excellent, and there is more than enough information for him at this stage in development. It is a perfect "Show and Tell" item to bring into the class, with the added bonus that it has a hard binding.
His five year old sister is also very taken with the drawings of the solar system and the planets and moons. It is a book guaranteed to attract the interest of any child.

Beautiful Illustrations and Very Informative

My four year old showed an interest in planets, so I purchased this book as a Christmas present. My husband reads it to him before bed and they discuss it and look at all the pictures. Although the book is sophisticated, my husband and I sometimes only read parts of the book, paraphrase or just examine the pictures. It has only added to his fascination with the planets and space. Well worth the money.

Choose this book! A huge hit with a 5 yr old & 8 yr old

If you're trying to choose between several different books on the solar system, choose this! It's beautiful and intriguing for a five year old, readable for an 8 -10 year old, and educational for folks of all ages. After a little research on amazon, I purchased three solar system/space books for a birthday gift and this book was by far the best received of the three. I have since purchased a couple more. The book is exceptionally well done with broad and lasting appeal.

The photographs are stunning and plentiful, as in a coffee-table book. Nearly every other page features a full-page photograph. The text is readable. The sentences are short and clearly-written, but they're not dumbed down in any way. There are many full pages of text, but all are double-spaced and there is abundant white space around the text, so it's not so dense as to scare off early readers. Everything about the book is child-friendly, but it's not a cute or silly kid's book in any way. I think most adults would find plenty to learn from the text and would appreciate the fact that one doesn't need an astrophysics degree to understand it.

One important note -- it's updated. Pluto no longer gets star billing. Pluto is mentioned as a dwarf or smaller planet, along with Ceres and Eris.

Overall, I highly recommend this book, and I would not hesitate to consider any other collaboration between author Seymour Simon and the Smithsonian Institution.

Tanpinar (1901-62) was a formative figure in modern Turkish letters, although 50 years after his death, his career in English is just getting off the ground. His monumental A Mind at Peace (1949), which Orhan Pamuk has called “the greatest novel ever written about Istanbul,” found its way into English in 2008 (Archipelago). About the Author
Ahmet Hamdi Tanipar (1901-1962) was a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, literary historian, member of the Turkish parliament, and professor at Istanbul University. Deeply influenced by Val�ry and Bergson, he created a cultural universe in his work, bringing together a European literary voice and the sensibilities of Istanbul cosmopolitanism. His work, notable for its aesthetic complexity and its vivid descriptions of a lost Ottoman world, was rediscovered a decade after his death. He is considered one of the most significant Turkish novelists of the 20th century and is credited as an influence on many Turkish writers, including Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk. His work has been translated into more than 25 languages.

Translator: Erdag G�knar is an assistant professor of Turkish Studies at Duke University. He is the translator of Orhan Pamuk's historical novel, My Name is Red, which received the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003. He is also the recipient of an NEA translation grant for A Mind at Peace.

A lyrical novel of Istambul

Orhan Pamur speaks of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar as an essential part of his sense of Istambul. Based on his descriptions of Tanpinar in his book Istambul, I was excited to read this translation of Tanpinar's masterpiece.

The physical book is extremely attractive, even sensual. With an old photo on the cover of several rowboats on the Bosphorus you are being introduced to the world within the book's covers. Elegant endpapers, thick off-white paper, and an unusually square shape to the book all present a pleasant, inviting physical object. Archipelago Books, I publisher I'd not encountered before, did an excellent job (though their editor missed a few too many errors).

On opening the book the first thing you notice is the lack of any notes, introduction, or even an index to the various Parts of the book. This is puzzling, and unfortunate. The dust jacket provides a few sentences on the author and this work (in addition to a few sentence plot summary). And even those sentences tell us little. What does it mean to say that this book is "a Turkish Ulysses"? The book deserves a wide readership, beyond the niche of people already familiar with this author. And that readership needs at least some minimal sign-posts to help navigate this dense examination of Istambul's intellectual, philosophical and moral dilemmas at the start of World War II. One method would be an introduction explaining the dynamics of Turkey at that time, and explaining Tanpinar's place in that debate. Another would be to provide a few footnotes, or end notes, explaining certain words or concepts unlikely to be understood by the average English speaking reader. For example, the debate over whether a character is mevlevi or bektashi was completely lost on me. How about you?

The novel starts "(City of Two Continents, August 1939)". And that could also be the one sentence summary of the novel. Turkey and its citizens are about to be plunged into WWII, a Western war that is very on the periphery of its interests, history and consciousness. But what is consuming the characters in this novel is the doppelganger of living in the past and the present, in the East and in the West, in two continents, two realities.

The novel is told using both the first and third person views of the main character, Mumtaz. And even the third person observations are claustrophobic, told from a ground level prospective never far from the immediate observations of Mumtaz, a young writer and intellectual who "does" essentially nothing during the 1939 focus of the book. He thinks, observes, feels. His love for Nuran, his hatred of yet attraction to Suad, the filial love and respect for Ihsan...these are drawn out in long, complex worlds of emotion that slowly built and deepen as the novel progresses.

But the central character in this novel is Turkey, Turkish, Istambul and the Borphorus. What do these things mean to a well educated, not-poor (I'm not sure what "class" these intellectuals belong to...but few have a conventional job) group of largely male intellectuals? The answer is a deep ambivalence. They live in a city of past architectural glory, the capitol of a vast empire. And while they are part of that heritage, they are also drawn to the present, to the Western. This is most often described in descriptions of music. Some of the most lyrical parts of the book describe Turkish classical music, the sound of the ney while a singer intones verses composed for various sultans. And while this is being lyrically described Mumtaz will realize that he is actually thinking of a Beethoven sonata. Quoting a Farsi couplet the discussion will veer to French symbolist poets. But oh the longing, the sorrow, of those couplets:
The days foreshortened, aged men in Kanlica
Conjure memories of past autumns one by one.

By the end of the novel you are left with a deep understanding of the longing felt by Mumtaz, to be his own person, not dragged down by the weight of his history and culture, yet aware that without those things he would be empty. "The vast fallout of two centuries of disintegration and collapse, of being the remnants of an empire and still unable to establish our own norms and idioms."

So why only 4 starts (and actually I would give it a 3.5)? Because of the lamentable translation. My definition of a good translation is one I don't notice. And this fails my test miserably. There is little plot in this novel. It is a closely observed study, and by necessity that means a book that is slowly, closely, read and observed. The lyrical content simply must be accompanied by similar prose or the image is shattered. On every page the reader encounters a variety of translation ticks: the hackneyed phrase, the unnecessarily complex words, the odd spelling, the anti-lyrical and the weird.

Hackneyed: hither and yond, oft times, by and by, by and large, truth be told, kith and kin, hale and hearty, sing a ditty, let the cat out of the bag, a slave of his baser desires.

Big words: in one paragraph we encounter quiddities, haecceities and ideational.

Odd spelling: phantasy and magick [each used many, many times].

Anti-lyrical: "Ihsan's personality was more agreeable than those personae of his preconceptions might have indicated" "exercise her volition to live apart" "the verdure assaulted one's casing of skin."

Weird: "at whiles." Synonym for periodically or at times. And used way too often!

So maybe Tanipar is addicted to archaic spellings, has a huge vocabulary that he throws around, is addicted to hackneyed phrases and the translator is merely following the original. Maybe, but adding all of these quirks together, if the translator has merely followed the original, this book would not be "the greatest novel ever written about Istambul," quoting Orhan Pamur.

This is a novel more in the spirit of a wm Faulkner novel than a Robert Graves piece. Why did I expect more war than personal, romantic intimacy? Frankly, I wonder if the translator has ever been in Turkey for any period of time. Imagery is good, but for me the translation is 'too high brow' maybe I should have tried to read the original Turkish, before turning to the English version because much of the English seems too 'unTurkish.' So much of what is translated seems more an invention of the translator than the intent of the author. I am soldering on reading the book because of the unique subject and unique period it encompasses.

"What is it that should be done?" This is the central question of A Mind at Peace at both the public and personal levels. The novel is set on the eve of World War II in Istanbul, Turkey. Its protagonist, M�mtaz, is a young, unmarried academic and would-be novelist. He is principally occupied at the moment, however, with caring for his older cousin İhsan who suffers from what appears likely to be a fatal case of pneumonia. İhsan had been M�mtaz's guardian and mentor ever since the latter's parents died as a result of the Greek invasion of Anatolia in 1919--events which M�mtaz recalls at the beginning of the novel.

M�mtaz also reflects ruefully upon his recently broken love affair with Nuran, a divorced woman slightly older than M�mtaz. In the long walks he takes to escape from the sick room, every sight and sound seems to recall the times he spent with Nuran.

After this prologue, the novel shifts back a year or more in time to M�mtaz's first meeting with Nuran. It is a relationship we know is doomed to failure, but not how or why. In the meantime, the two lovers, enraptured with one another, spend many idle hours in all seasons exploring their city--from palaces to bazaars, from waterways to ancient ruins. Eventually M�mtaz even wonders "Do we love each other or the Bosphorus?"

On a par with their passion for Istanbul is the pair's enthusiasm for traditional Turkish music. There are lengthy discussions about it, as well as sessions where Nuran's uncle, a noted vocalist, and his friends perform for guests. (It's a shame that the novel couldn't have included a CD to satisfy readers' inevitable curiosity about the folk music described in such rapturous terms.)

Notwithstanding the love story and travelogue, A Mind at Peace is essentially a novel of ideas. It is August 1939, and the world is obviously on the brink of another great war. The Turks have no reason to expect that they won't be involved, but should they just let the currents of history carry them into another bloodbath? What is the responsibility of the individual, especially of the intellectual, at times like this? After long talks with his cousin, M�mtaz asks himself: "Maybe İhsan does have a point! This society wants ideas and maybe even a struggle out of me. Not romantic posturing! But to achieve this end must I forget about Nuran?"

There is obviously much of Hamlet's "To be, or not to be..." in M�mtaz's dilemma. Readers of Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities will also find themselves on familiar ground with a protagonist full of ideas but lacking in direction. In contrast to M�mtaz there is Suad, a key character introduced fairly late in the novel, who is his mirror image: a man of intellectual attainment but impulsive, irresponsible, self-indulgent and proud of his Sadean amorality. Nuran, in contrast to both of these men, is centered on her feelings, her family, and her cultural roots. In the author's words, "Nuran depended on a minimum level of selfhood. She lived through her milieu."

A Mind at Peace is a great novel that brings forth ideas of epic scale out of an intimate story, and does so against an unforgettable historical and cultural backdrop. The principal characters, notwithstanding their penchant for philosophical abstracts, are convincingly complete and complex. The author's prose, beautifully translated, has an evocative and lyrical quality in keeping with the musical theme running through the novel. Here, for example, is a passage describing Nuran:

"Not a single spot existed on her small face with which he wasn't familiar. For M�mtaz, her face became his panorama of the soul: the way it blossomed to love like a flower, closed definitively upon a despairing smile--the metallic radiance burning in her eyes asquint--and not least of all the way her face changed by degrees like a daybreak over the Bosphorus.... With a look, she dressed him up and stripped him down, at one moment turning him into a pitiful, forsaken malcontent with no recourse but Allah, and at the next into the very master of his fate."

For both its profound discussion of ideas central to the human condition and its vivid portrayal of a place, a time and a people, A Mind at Peace is highly recommended.

Book is good, but you will still have to have better ...

Book is good, but you will still have to have better than average knowledge to utilize it. Still reads like the extended version of your owners manual so don't expect a ton of pictures and service warnings like the full online (subscription) mechanics references have. Wish it would detail out error codes and what probable causes and secondary cautions should be (with reference pictures).

For general maintenance this is ok. But if you aren't familiar with cars or your particular model, I'd look online for references instead.

It is hard cover and easy to read print

Bought this recently to help replacing down pipes on 335xi BMW, and subsequent repairs to cooling system- Radiator, intercooler, ATF cooler. Also used for oil change info.

Using this manual does not provide you with 100% of the info you need but has alot of technical info such as torque specs and schematics. The pictures are sometimes hard to correlate with actual car but with careful studying are understandable.

It is hard cover and easy to read print. I would buy it again.

One note however, is that it directs you to a website for updates to the info in the manual, but the update website charges a fee for use. I don't think it was this way in the past.

Good manual for the hands-on BMW guy/gal.

Awesome book. Hopefully I don't need to use it too often on my N55 Engine but I'm confident in doing typical maintenance more now that I have this manual.
It does have several print errors in it but they're not major. Such as a section for a N55 repair having pictures of N54 engine like the previous section had.
It's good read starting from the beginning for any BMW aficionado to learn the progress in 3-series engines and how things work in their German cars. I certainly enjoyed reading the technical stuff as an Engineer but also as an aficionado.
