Milton Unbound: Controversy and Reinterpretation, by John P. Rumrich

John Milton holds a crucial strategic position on the intellectual and ideological map of literary studies. In this provocative and liberating study, John P. Rumrich contends that contemporary critics have contributed to the invention of a monolithic or institutional Milton: censorious preacher, aggressive misogynist, and champion of the emerging bourgeoisie. Rumrich exposes the historical inaccuracies and logical inconsistencies that sustain this orthodoxy, and argues instead for a more complex Milton who was able to accommodate uncertainty and doubt.

Confusion and Error
By Jenn
In attempting to "re-invent" John Milton, Rumrich actually commits some of the same mistakes he accuses other critics of making. In refuting Milton's supposed Oedipal complex he re-analyzes Milton to be suffering from some sort of Maternal womb envy (to over simplify the argument). Rumrich claims that critics who argue that Milton suffers from an Oedipal complex are actually revealing more about themselves than about the poet -- so why would this theory not in turn apply to Rumrich himself? His idea that Milton desired to be some sort of hermaphrodite was interesting, but somewhat far-fetched. The digression Rumrich goes on in discussing the similarity between Newton's and Milton's religious beliefs is so completely unintrinsic to the argument he's attempting to make (that Milton held unorthodox religious beliefs) that it becomes quite perplexing as to why he's spending so much time on the views of Sir Isaac. So what if he and Milton shared this belief? And the concluding chapter on Chaos is quite fitting, as this book is a complex and confused amalgamation of ideas that fails to coalesce into any real coherence. Perhaps Rumrich's biggest mistake is stating that Paradise Lost reveals that God is Chaos. Simply b/c chaos is the womb of God and is essential to his existence, does not imply that Milton was saying God is chaos. Rumrich's illustration of Milton's disbelief in the trinity should be applied here: God the son is not the same or even equal to God the father. Duh. Extend Milton's reasoning here to refute your claim.
But all this being said, the book is certainly thought prevoking, and it is very, very important to realize that Milton was not simply a supporter of the standard religious dogma. He was a unique, and complex thinker, who examined his beliefs on almost every level.

Virginia product
By A Customer
I was a friend of John Rumrich's as a graduate student at the University of Virginia. He is a genius and this book explains why. He is now a distinguished Milton scholar at the University of Texas, and this book is the culmination of his scholarly work. A must for any lover of Milton, or great scholarship for that matter.

Slightly biased review from a distant relative
By Dorna Caskie
The Rev Dr. Donald Caskie was not a novelist, but he wrote well and he lived a remarkable life. The first half of this book is the story of how he, as a leader of the Church of Scotland in occupied France, operated part of an "underground railway" to rescue Allied POWs and get them to safe ground. The situations he describes are scary, funny, and profound. The last half of the book takes a very different turn (spoiler). I am ordering the book now from Amazon because I haven't read it in a while, but I recall quite a few spiritual passages while he was in prison. He simply tried to live his life and be the man he was under terrible circumstances. Maybe 40 or more years ago there was a movie made of this book, and there was an announcement last year that the BBC would be doing a new mini-series of the story, but I haven't seen it yet.

A great book for everyone to enjoy!
By Deborah Shechter
I love this book! It is a true story told by the Tartan Pimpernel himself. World War II told from another angle. The author has a great sense of humor despite the circumstances. A heartening story. Absolutely recommended!

Review

“An exceptionally engaging narrative....Written in a lively style that will surely grab the attention of students, this textbook offers a balanced approach to the American past by concisely blending political, economic, social, and cultural history.”

Brad Cartwright, University of Texas at El Paso

“The approach the authors have taken makes the course not only easier to teach, but by far more interesting in that it challenges the students to consider different viewpoints and the impact each has on the whole of history.”

Daniel Donalson, Houston Community College Southeast

“The text accomplishes the difficult task of merging narrative with multiple perspectives, keeping a careful eye on the diversity of American experiences. The writing is engaging, the scholarship is up-to-date, and the overall value of the textbook makes it an excellent choice for U.S. survey courses.”

Melanie Perrault, Salisbury University

Wide ranging basic introduction
By Dr. Eugene Gath
This book covers a wide variety of topics in financial mathematics, with a reasonable but not too technical level of mathematics. It is well suited to a two-semester advanced undergraduate or taught masters course for students with a maths/appled maths/engineering background. Many such courses require several textbooks (of which there are many well written ones), but this book could be used as a catch-all single text for a course covering a smorgasbord of topics in financial maths. It is presented in an easy to read style.

Review
The Jesus Storybook Bible is, in my opinion, one of the best resources available to help both children and adults see the Jesus-centered story line of the Bible. Tullian Tchividjian, Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church -- PCA, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Review
In the interests of full disclosure, let me reveal that I had the privilege of reading the manuscript of this book several years ago as a theological consultant to Zondervan, the publisher. I did not know, however, of the fulsome thanks to my husband Tim in the acknowledgments until I received my review copy a few days ago. Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Redeemer member for many years, has done a wondrous thing. She has captured the plot line of redemption in a children's story Bible that sings the praise of Jesus and his saving grace on every page, in every story. Most children's books of Bible stories are little more than a Christianized version of Aesop's fables, or at best, a Christian adventure cartoon. But Sally goes out of her way in the first pages of the book to reclaim the true story of the Bible: not a book of rules, nor a book of heroes, but: “The Bible is most of all a Story…It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story is--it's true! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them.” This is heady theology, often missed in adult preaching and teaching, but fully realized in an age appropriate and attractive form that will delight children and often (at least for me) leave the grown up reader in tears. More wondrously, she has avoided the moralism and legalism that so often characterizes Christian educational materials for children. For five years I worked as an editor of children's curriculum, requiring me to review, edit, and sometimes write Sunday school material for children. It is very hard to find (or even produce) material for children that doesn't essentially contain the message “Be good, so that God, your heavenly Father, will love you, and your earthly parents will be happy with you, too.” To discover The Jesus Storybook Bible is to have a unique resource for communicating the gospel to children in all it's fullness. I hope that every family, and even people without young children, would get a copy of this book just to remind them of what the Real Story of the Bible is all about. -- Kathy Keller

From the Author
I wrote this so children could know that God is for them and loves them with a Never Stopping, Never Giving up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love.

Disappointed with theological inaccuracies and tone
By J Watson
We were excited to receive a copy of this book as a gift as I had read and heard rave reviews from numerous places and people I trust. We read through it cover to cover on a nightly basis (1 story a night) with our 2.5 year old and we will not be reading it again. I wanted to write a review here because I wish I had known more about the book before we read it, so I'm hoping this review will help others get a balanced perspective.

I want to preface this by saying that much of the Jesus Storybook Bible is very well done. Many of the reasons we won't be reading it again are preferential more than theological--the tone and style are not what we're looking for, but many may love it. However, as we read through the book with my son, we ran across some issues that cemented our discontent, and many of them were things we consider non-negotiable issues. While a book for kids is obviously not going to be a thorough or completely accurate translation of biblical texts, we feel very strongly that we don't want to be teaching anything now (explicitly or otherwise) that we will have to "unteach" later. This goes for tone, details, attitudes and big concepts alike. That said, here are a few of our thoughts.

I'll start by mentioning a few things I really liked about the Jesus Storybook Bible (JSB). I thought the whimsical style really suited both the creation narrative and the description of Revelation. It also worked well for many of the Old Testament stories (Tower of Babel, Noah & the flood, Jonah). I appreciate the emphasis on Christ as the center of God's plan and love the idea of "every story whispering His name" (the tag-line for the book). That being said, we really felt that the authors overstepped and added to or changed parts of scripture in a way that could be genuinely harmful to our children's developing spiritual lives and understanding. I'll give a few bullet points that stand out to me with an example of each.

- The result of the fall. The JSB says that because of the fall, a terrible lie came into the world: "God doesn't love me." This theme runs throughout many of the stories. Now, of course doubting God's love is part of the results of the fall, but to sum it up that way really doesn't get to the heart of our culpability and need for forgiveness. We are broken, but we are also responsible. We are not just victims of the fall, we are perpetrators, and I think that is incredibly important for children to understand.

- The addition of unnecessary and unbiblical details. In almost every story, the JSB has embellishments that stray from the text. While that's somewhat understandable to make it accessible to little ones, we really felt they stepped over the line and described scenes that were not only not in scripture but could easily sway the understanding of a biblical character's character and personality.

o Example: In the story of God's command to Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, after God stops Abraham, there is this paragraph:

"Abraham felt his heart leap with joy. He unbound Isaac and folded him in his arms. Great sobs shook the old man's whole body. Scalding tears filled his eyes. And for a long time, they stayed there like that, in each other's arms...."

I am uncomfortable with that not because it isn't true, but because I have no idea if that's what happened. It's highly specific and it feels wrong to me to tell my kids a Bible story that way. There's nothing wrong with saying Abraham was overjoyed, relieved, and rejoiced, but being so specific feels eerily of untruth to me.

- The addition of details that are ANTI-biblical. I know that sounds very harsh, but I mean to make a distinction between details that we can't know, like my point above, and details that we know are untrue, if relatively "harmless."

o Example: In the story of Jacob working for Laban to earn Rachel's hand:

"One day, Laban said, `Jacob, I've decided to pay you for your work. What do you want?' A sudden thought struck him. `How about one of my daughters?'"

You can read Gen. 29 to see that this is not an accurate account at all. Jacob is the one who suggests marriage to one of Laban's daughters. In fact, the JSB's version of the story is framed as Rachel being the "popular girl" and Leah the girl that "nobody wanted," while in scripture the only thing to suggest this is a description of Rachel as beautiful and Leah as plain. Not only do we not want to introduce the "pretty popular" versus "ugly boring" dichotomy any earlier than it will present itself, this belies the nature of the passage and hoists far too much modern cynicism onto the story. Is it harmful to change those little details? Maybe not, but again, it makes us very uncomfortable. We would much rather err on the side of caution (and in this case, the side of scripture).

- Irreverence. This is my #1 problem with this text. It's one thing to simplify language and large theological concepts, but unfortunately the whimsy of the language in the JSB often seems to turn into cheek and strays far from the holiness and awe found in the biblical narrative.

o Example: The description of Gabriel's visit to Mary. In scripture, we see Mary as receptive, in awe of the honor bestowed upon her, and both reverent and submissive. The JSB says Mary was "minding her own business" and when the angel told her she was chosen by God, she "looked over her shoulder to see if he was talking to somebody else." I know to some people these additions would feel like no big deal, but we want our children to grow up with an abiding sense of awe at God's presence and work. This was not just some casual encounter! And Mary, as seen in scripture, didn't treat it that way.
When we speak of these incredible moments when God reached into history, I want my children hear them described with reverence and appropriate fear, not nonchalance. Yes, the words and ideas need to be simple enough to be accessible to children, but simplicity and reverence are not only compatible, but according to Christ they require one another.

Alongside this point, we were really disappointed in the immature and petty attitudes portrayed in many of the characters. It seemed that in the JSB, heroes of the faith were always arguing, being petty and rude, and rarely (if ever) maturing throughout their stories. The book seemed to have a very black and white view of its characters. Jesus is good. Everyone else is vicious and just doesn't get it. Sure, we as humans often don't get it. But if I'm going to tell my children that I want them to model their lives after the great men and women in the Bible, I want them to see and hear about those who were changed by their encounters with Christ and lived incredible, selfless lives. I do NOT want them modeling their lives after the men and women in the JSB.

I think the real tipping point for us was the story of the Last Supper. The JSB messed with that particular story so much we almost quit reading in the middle of it. Here are the highlights of the problems we saw:

o The JSB story begins with the disciples arguing over not wanting to wash each other's feet. This is totally inaccurate--See John 13. Not only was there no arguing, but they never would have expected one of them (or Jesus) to do it. It was a servant's job. Jesus brought it up by beginning to serve them, not in the midst of an argument.

o The JSB includes Peter's refusal of Jesus' washing and Jesus' comment that if he did not wash him, Peter could have no part with him. Peter's response of "then wash all of me!" is included, but not Jesus' gentle reminder that only his feet needed washing. In our minds, this is very incomplete. If they did not want to include the more difficult theology of Jesus' second answer, they shouldn't have included Peter's second comment either.

o The JSB changes Christ's words during the Last Supper, having him say, "My body is like this bread. It will break." There are so many things wrong with this interpretation, especially if you do not adhere to the bread and wine as a "mere symbol." The emphasis is on the bread, not Christ's body. Also, the JSB flips the metaphor around and says, "This cup of wine is like my blood." The power in the statements of Christ in the Last Supper is in their simplicity, and we are hard pressed to think of a good reason to change the simple and accurate translation of "This is my body" and "This is my blood." Even if you believe they are simply a metaphor and don't want to confuse (often literal) children, the JSB is liberal with metaphors elsewhere. These essential words of Christ seem an obvious place to keep scriptural integrity.

o The JSB also changes Jesus' specific command to celebrate the Lord's Supper ("Do this in remembrance of me") into a general heaven-ward thought when we consume food & drink (From the JSB: "So whenever you eat and drink, remember... I've rescued you!"). I don't think any Orthodox Christian would see this as an accurate representation of Christ's expectation.

So, I've written a lot of criticism here, and I hope it will be taken as it is intended. It helped us immensely to have to write all of this down. Some points on which I thought I had legitimate concerns, I discovered were not theological at all and I was forced to reevaluate. Others I became even more convinced that this is not the biblical standard I want to hold up for my children. If these were Richard Scarey stories or Curious George, I could look at my kids and say, "That's not right, is it?" But when we sit down and say we're going to learn about Jesus and His story, I want to be as accurate, reverent and choosy as I can be, because there is a lot at stake. Those are our (very long) 2 cents. Please take them with a grain of salt.

Every Godparent should buy this for Godchild
By A+Text
Wow! Comes with a DVD and the whole amazing children's Bible on CD. Amazing for ages 4-104. Seriously. If you are investigating the Christian faith, this is a great place to start. If you have walked with Jesus for 30 years, this Bible will provide new insight as well - even for pastors! Theologically sound, don't worry (that's my degree). Drawback is that CDs do not have chimes when to turn page - so better for reading along than children who cannot read.

Perfect for Family Reading
By ccgirl
When I kept hearing that this was the best children's Bible to get--from a variety of different sources that didn't have any connections to each other--I took notice and put it on my Amazon wish list. I was thrilled to get a copy for my birthday a couple of years ago. That night, I settled down to read it to my young children, and the very first chapter was so beautifully written that I immediately got choked up and couldn't finish reading! My husband took over the reading, and I became an avid listener. We've read this children's Bible from cover to cover at least twice, and we've jumped around to certain stories a few times also. It is definitely my favorite of all the toddler/pre-school Bibles that we've read (my kids are now 6 and almost 5). The writing is so lovely that I imagine we'll continue to re-read it as a family over many years. My husband and I enjoyed it just as much as our children did. I've also pulled out a few quotes from this Bible to send to adult friends who were going through tough times--so the fact that it speaks to children and adults alike speaks volumes about this author's talent. I can't recommend this Bible enough! We have a hard copy as well as a copy on Kindle (we save that one for "waiting room" moments)!

Latest edition of THE Schaum's for college physics
By calvinnme
Many freshman college physics textbooks are just awful. They often go on and on about what is obvious and gloss over the finer points...and of course there are no examples. This is where this book comes in. As in all Schaum's outlines, for each topic there are a few pages of theory including equations, then some problems with the solutions worked out extensively, and then finally some problems with the answers but no extensive solution. The format of the outline is the same that you should expect in any two semester college freshman physics sequence. The first part of the book is an explanation of vectors, newtonian mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics. The second part of the book follows the usual second semester of freshman physics - electricity, magnetism, and optics. The final seven chapters of the outline are an introduction to modern physics, which engineers and physics students would normally take after they finish the two semester freshman physics sequence. A note of caution - do not buy the attractively named "Schaums Outline of Physics for Engineering and Science". It is chocked full of errors! Instead, stay with this old reliable title. It is the best. This is the very recently released 10th edition, so Amazon does not show the table of contents. I do that here so you can compare it to the 9th edition and see if it is worth the upgrade.

Good supplement
By Confusion
This book is meant as an aid for a student taking a College Physics course based on Algebra, and not on Calculus. It covers all of the major topics for General Physics I and II, from Classical Physics, including vectors, kinematics, and dynamics all the way through Modern Physics, including Relativity and Nuclear Physics.

As is the case with all of the books of the Schaum's Outline series, this particular volume is a supplement and is not intended to replace your textbook or your professor. It is really meant for someone who has already grappled with the material from a textbook and has some idea of the concepts already. If you are approaching the material for the first time, I would advise you to steer clear of this book until you have approached it from another source. Also, if you are searching for a book with a really qualitative or intuitive approach to Physics, or one with lengthy explanations, I would recommend looking for another book. If you are looking for a supplement that you can read prior to your textbook, or for a supplement that doesn't read like a condensed textbook (as this one does), I would recommend something like Physics for Dummies.

That said, the book is divided up into various short chapters. I like that the chapters are not especially long and that while most conventional textbooks would group them into one giant chapter, this book breaks them down. For example, Coloumb's Law and Capacitance are divided into two chapters. There is a terse run-through of the material pertaining to the concept (usually they are about 1-2 pages long). If you already have tried to read your textbook, this book will probably help you, as it hits the highlights and gives you a better idea of the broad picture, allowing you to integrate your information. There are some helpful figures as well.

While the summary is useful, it does miss out on some details and does not go into proofs of equations, and it does not offer a deep, intuitive break down of the concepts. For example, the book says "the equations of motion are related graphically," but the authors have not included or explained the graphs in the text. They assume that you have a textbook to explain those details. In short, I can see this being particularly useful right before an exam as a quick review, but not as a primary learning source.

After the summary of the concepts, there is a section of worked problems, and a section of supplementary problems that are not worked, but to which answers are provided. The book has a plethora of problems that will test your understanding of the subject matter. The best way to learn Physics is to do problems constantly, and this book really forces you to figure out how to problem solve. The questions range from easy to difficult, and many problems are likely to challenge you.

While the problems are very helpful in reinforcing what you have learned, I do have a few minor issues. Sometimes the explanations of the worked problems can be a little too brief, and can be a little confusing. I would also have liked to see all of the problems worked through (but I do believe Schaum's has a book of 3000 fully worked problems). My biggest problem is with the formatting of the Supplemental Problems, as the editors have placed the answers right next to the questions! It is impossible not to see them. I think they should have put the answers in the back of the book.

I would say that this is an excellent resource for quick brush-ups and for problem solving help. I wish that some of the explanations of the concepts had been a little more detailed, but this is one of the best General Physics aids that I have found. I must stress once again that this book is NOT a replacement for your textbook, and that it is not some sort of shortcut or miracle book. You will have to put in a lot of work to understand Physics, and studying the summaries and problems in this book will certainly give you more confidence, and will allow you to tackle the problems set by your teacher with greater ease. This book has really helped me out.

Thank you for reading my review, and I hope it was helpful to you.

A good place to begin your Physics education
By Michael Birman
I wore out two copies of this Schaum's Outline of College Physics over the years. This is the Physics review book geared towards courses using Algebra and not Calculus. The Calculus based Outline, Physics for Engineering and Science, utilizes more rigorous mathematics, requires a greater comfort level with abstraction and is, unfortunately, notorious for its typos. I find that learning Physics, which is daunting enough, can be traumatic if you are simultaneously worried about mathematics AND errors. Freshman Physics is pretty universal in its design, but not so universal in its implementation when it concerns mathematics and rigor. This book presents essentially the same Physics topics as the Calc based one. It's filled with some nice examples, good and clear explanations and many solved problems. If your Physics course is Algebra based, then this book is more than sufficient review. Just do as many problems as you can until the material is part of your genetic structure!
