Finally, A Book That Speaks the Truth About Celibacy

Like most Catholics, we wonder how our priests do it. How do they live without sex? How do they remain committed to their vows in a culture where historically the church has had a repressed view of sex? Are priests left hopelessly lonely, without intimacy and of ever finding a path towards spiritual and psycho-sexual integration?
I read this book with curiosity, wondering how my priest friends might really live celibate lives and remain healthy. I wondered too how I might encourage my priest friends as I walk with them in ministry. I hoped I might at least find in this book some clues.
With the first chapter, I found myself surprisingly engaged in conversation with myself. Every thought I had ever had about the subject was addressed in an approachable way. Fr. Manuel draws one into the heart of the bigger picture where grace is found. I had to wrestle with the question of how any of us ultimately fulfills those longings that are not about sex but rather, about our deep longings for intimacy. Halfway through the book the conversation became an investigation of "Healthy Pathways for All." For most laypersons, sex ultimately becomes more about fidelity and intimacy. And to this, we are all human. Every priest or anyone who also longs to find happiness with or without sexual fulfillment should read this book.

Well done...

Fr. Manuel's lived experience as a Catholic priest, and his background as a Clinical Psychologist, give this book a depth and authenticity that is refreshingly honest and open for such a difficult topic. It helps that he illustrates his points with concrete stories from priests and religious men and women who have also lived, and are living, this reality. This book also has much to say to those of us who are not celibate about love, sexuality and commitment. I believe anyone can benefit from its wisdom about human relationships in general, as well as what it says about our own intimate committed relationships. Well written and worth reading!

At last, something for human priests!

Fr. Manuel writes a book on a difficult subject and treats priests (and others) as real people, human beings! I like his many examples and stories, and how he treats celibacy as a choice to be lived out of human daily living. Men and women of all types, faiths and lifestyles choose to be celibate. To live this in a healthy, human way takes smarts as much as faith. This is a book that stresses both in a way that brings them into an integral blend of good human living.
