A wake-up call for governing boards

Anyone serving on, or working with, a governing board should read this cautionary tale and commit its message to memory. Dr. Mott's book provides a clear picture of what NOT to do as a board member.
In his John Grisham-esque style, Dr. Mott takes the reader through the trials of a very qualified and determined CEO as he struggles to lead his institution, dragging a dysfunctional board along with him. The Board Game lays out what can happen when a board member has an exalted view of his own importance, as well as the damage done if a well-intentioned member fails to stand up to a board bully.
Learning the lessons of Dr. Mott's snapshot of a board presented in The Board Game can save many institutions a lot of nonproductive years.

A Must-Read for Non-Profit Executives!

If you're a non-profit executive, you know what it's like to work with a Board of Trustees filled with do-gooders, distinguished individuals, and big personalities! While each of them (usually) means well and has the best of intentions in mind, they may not be the easiest of folks to get along with on a regular basis. However, when you are trying to run a business that they, in reality, control, you're obligated to find a way to make it work. In "The Board Game," David Andrews reveals the approach he took to make that happen. Perfect for executive directors, fundraising and development directors, and anyone whose job it is to "triumph over chaos" no matter what the situation may be. (Great for sharing at staff and volunteer retreats!)

Great book... informative, entertaining, insightful...

The ability to identify productive, affordable, objective-based strategies and then secure the willing support of key executives, administrators and stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes are key elements of effective leadership. While many of the challenges of serving on or working with Governing Boards are unique, the author's well-constructed message that effective communication skills and the ability to apply situationally-optimized interpersonal strategies to workgroup activities are critical to organizational success is applicable to any endeavor that requires coordinated planning, collaborative decision-making and collective oversight.
