A historical introduction explains the Ptolemaic view of planetary motion and its displacement by the studies of Copernicus, Kepler, and Newton. Succeeding chapters examine the making of celestial observations and measurements and explain such central concepts as the ecliptic, the orbital plane, the two- and three-body problems, and perturbed motion. Ryabov also describes how perturbations in the path of Uranus led to the discovery of Neptune, and he devotes considerable attention to satellites, including a detailed treatment of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I. Additional topics include planetary rotation, the calculation of units of time, and the motions of the stars, with illustrations of how the law of gravity determines the shapes of galaxies. The book concludes with a deeper consideration of gravity, pointing out basic distinctions between classical and Einsteinian theories.

elementary ... but very good

An elementary Soviet treatise on celestial-mechanics/ astrodynamics. Written shortly after sputnik (sputnik 1957, book 1959), it contains some (obligatory) boasting on Soviet achievements. While more elementary than most astrodynamics books, it has its own strong points. Foremost are detailed examples of just how feeble gravitational attraction really is; and how difficult it was to accurately measure the gravitational constant. It also goes into the epistemological side of Newton's theory of gravitation, its shortcomings, and why Einstein's theory was required. (This kind of exploration is rare.) The mathematics used does not rise above elementary algebra and trigonometry, but is skillfully employed so as to make the point.
There is a curious discussion and equation on page 39 that I could not quite follow. On page 48 appears another example of the feableness of gravity. This time the problem is to compute the attraction between two ships. The answer provided, about 60 grams, is correct for two mass points, but is incorrect for two ships, where the actual attraction is much smaller. (The reason is that in order to float the ship must displace its weight in water. This creates a hole which acts as a "negative mass" ... in effect ... resulting in a repulsion (in effect). The net force is a second order effect, amounting to a fraction of a gram.)

The book is certainly of interest from a historical perspective. It is also a very good introduction for the advanced high-school student.

Reasonably Gentle Introduction to Celestial Mechanics

I liked this book -- particularly the first half. In the first half, the author makes a very accessible presentation of Kepler's laws. The line of reasoning is clear and quite self-contained. This really is the first presentation of Kepler's calculations that I have seen that is accessible for the scientifically-inclined layman. The author also does a nice job with Newton's work (some knowledge of calculus concepts would help here). The later half of the book tries to present perturbation theory. While interesting, the arguments are less rigorous and more conceptual. The author also takes a very brief look at Earth satellites (very new at the time of publication - 1959) and Einstein's work (very cursory).

The book does require that the reader have a working knowledge of algebra. A little high school physics would also help. Some calculus background would help when going through the material in the appendix.

Celestial Mechanics

I have always wanted to understand how orbital calculations are made. How does one move to a different orbit? I was hoping this book would be an easy and elementary introduction to the subject; it's not. It's pretty complicated stuff with heavy emphasis on math. I also ordered a second book titled "An Introduction To Celestial Mechanics", which is very calculus intensive. Both books are fine for those with a strong mathematical bent and a desire to learn basic celestial mechanics, but for the ordinary layman, forget it!
