Buy this, not the compilation

This is by far the best of my ukulele instruction books. The authors and DVD teacher Daniel Ho do a fine job of introducing the novice player to the ukulele, to playing chords, to strumming, to note reading. Exercises are in that sweet 80/20 spot educators like to talk about (where learners are always being pushed forward-the 20%, but also are getting reinforcement on past learning-the 80%). The idea is that 80/20 keeps students challenged, but not frustrated. (I have no idea if this came about by happy accident or intention.) This book is one of a 3-part series, each accompanied by its own DVD. There is also a compilation book that is priced below the cost of the three, but does not include the 3 DVDs. The novice player, or someone like me who has remained a little stuck at the beginner/intermediate level, would be better served spending the money on the individual book/DVDs. Buyers should keep in mind, there is no magic bullet when it comes to the ukulele. The lessons taught in Beginning Ukulele require attention and persistence (deliberate practice in response to weakness). Determined players, whether newbies or stuck in a rut, will find it very useful.

Great Book for those new to the Ukulele

This book and the accompanying DVD are a great resource for those wanting to learn to play the ukulele. This book will take you from the very basics of first starting to play to the point of being able to make some pretty good music. It introduces you to a variety of styles and techniques, as well as to basic music theory. I would recommend this book to anyone from a complete beginner to someone who has been playing for a while but wants to become more technically proficient or expand their capabilities.

Good lessons, but too difficult to follow along.

Very hard to follow the video with the book, and the chapters are numbered different. It moves along quickly, but the pause option helps. As a beginner I found this frustrating. Though, he is awesome and in time I hope to go back and figure it all out.
